                                                                             TRAINS
                                                                    by Jean Gotchall
Some of you have asked me how I come up with new stories each month, so I’ll tell you how I came up with this one. I was watching Antiques Roadshow, and one of the items brought in was a Lionel Train. The word “train” brought up memories of freight trains in Council Bluffs Iowa, and all the hours we spent waiting for the track to clear. You could see the end of the train, when the brakes screeched, the train stopped, and a car was uncoupled from the end. This could be repeated many times, and we knew what to expect—a half hours wait. So car doors would open, and we all got out to socialize to fill the time. There was always someone you knew there. Ladies exchanged recipes, and talked about their kids. Men exchanged ideas about getting rid of gophers or moles, or maybe the new stop light just installed at the corner of Broadway and Pearl. Kids looked for friends to hang out with. In our case, we were headed for the river, hoping to find a cool breeze there, in the summer. No one got mad, there would have been no point, as we knew how important trains were to our economy.
Then, on the way home, if dad had 40 cents in his pocket, we’d stop at the A & W root beer stand. Dad had the 15 cent size, mom had the 10 cent size, and we 3 cherubs had the 5 cent size. See how easily large amounts of money could slip through your fingers, even in a depression!
